The Refuge Review

Newsletter of the Friends of the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge  Ÿ  Spring 2006

With the battle over complexing our Refuge with Benton Lake now behind us we can focus on positive programs going forward for the balance of this year. Many groups in the region assisted in defeating the complexing idea which showed the very strong community support for the Refuge. An additional outgrowth was the appointment of a new director for Region 6, Mitch King. We think Mitch will be a positive force of support for the Refuge in the Future

Annual Membership Meeting

We will be holding our annual membership meeting on April 15th.  All members are invited to attend at 1:30 PM at the visitor’s center conference room. We intend to have a program including the Kearlien bear dogs which are now being trained by the Wind River Bear Institute in Florence. Also we will have additional discount items available in the gift shop during our meeting time. Light refreshments will be served.

Refuge License is Now Available

We have submitted an application to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a specialty license plate promoting the Refuge system. The outstanding design was developed by Peggy Woods for the Friends group and will cost $35.00 of which $20 will paid to our Friends group annually to support our efforts. The license plates can also be customized with your own choice for the same fee as normal personalized plates.  Below is a picture of the license plate.

Senator Burns Visits Metcalf Refuge

Senator Conrad Burns was a guest of the Friends board on the Refuge on March 18th.  We were able to successfully demonstrate the current condition of the Refuge, its pending needs and the direction we hope to pursue for an enhanced Refuge and its important role in the Bitterroot Valley’s ecological and conservation future.  The Senator is very supportive of our vision which coincides with his, and he intends to do what he can to help us make things happen.  We reviewed our appropriations request for additional funds and staff to facilitate the development of the many public/private partnership opportunities available to us.
